NOX AETURNUM was formed one night in a pub.  Jeff knew Matt (White) and was introduced to Matt (Jackson) and Cliff (Bond) after the subject of forming a band came up.  It turned our that they were all looking for a band to concentrate on after not being able to form a decent line up in other bands.  Jeff conceived the idea of NOX AETURNUM after being in a seminal London Doom Metal band back in 1993 named GRAVEN IMAGE.   Doom Metal is one of his first loves in music having been influenced by BLACK SABBATH, PARADISE LOST, CANDLEMASS and SOLITUDE AETURNUS in the past along with UK act SOLSTICE and US band WHILE HEAVEN WEPT.

"Listening to WHILE HEAVEN WEPT brought a lot of really fun memories back to me of how we used to write for GRAVEN IMAGE, and I just knew I had to do the doom thing again!  Luckily these guys were at least aware of the doom genre and some of their favourite bands were stalwart doom metal outfits.  It was just natural from then to write in this style."

And so it was that Jeff pitched the idea to his friends and after an general agreement that it was an area they would all love to explore, the wheels were set in motion.  They drafted in a drummer (Mike) to do one rehersal and much to Jeff's delight, the band managed to write a song together inside of three hours.  For 5 guys who have never played together before, Jeff saw it as quite an achievement.

"...It was obvious that it all just clicked.  Everyone was into it and although the song wasn't really in keeping with the doom genre, it was a laugh to write and play.  Actually, I think we ripped off PRONG in a big way. I cant even remember half the riffs now!"

The search for a band name however was a harder nut to crack.  After months of throwing about any old name, Jeff and Matt were sitting in the pub with their friends who were members of THE AXIS OF EVIL and throwing ideas around, the suggestion of NOX AETURNUM (or "Eternal Night" as is one latin translation*)  came up.

"It was like a bolt of lightning.  There we were in a drunken state laughing about crappy names and out of the blue came this!  We owe Johnny Bastard a pint for that!  hopefully he wont remember too much about it!"

Jeff set about recording some riffs and keeping the idea alive and after a few months his efforts began to pay dividends.  Their first track "The Eternal Lament" holds great promise for the future.

"It was a musical accident while I was recording!  it just happened that way and i'm glad it did!  Its my favourite song i've written so far"

After writing the song, Jeff experimented with various sounds and finally added an orchestrated part to the track.  This was to become the "Nox Aeturnum sound" and it was obvious that to perform this stuff live, they would need a keyboard player.  Jeff turned to fellow musician Jason (Bostridge).

"Jason and I knew each other from the 80s.  We had always talked about forming a band together but due to events in our personal lives, we never did get around to it."

Jeff asked Jason to join full time and add Keyboards to their doom laden metallic barrage. Listening to their music it is obvious that their style is a stunning mixture of melancholy metal, triumphant orchestration and emotionaly dark subject matter covering the likes of Suicide, Magic, Horror and classical literature, most prominent in their track "The Raven" which is a direct translation of the tale be Edgar Allen Poe.

"There is a wealth of lyrics in old literature just waiting to be discovered.  Poe, Lovecraft, Shakesphere et all were masters of the written word in their day and I hope we get the opportunity to explore some of their works in our music at some point.  Not that I want to do fully blown concept albums... Concept tracks perhaps...."

The band are currently busy writing music for a forthcoming demo EP entitled "THE SHADOW OF OTHER TIMES" to be produced by JON TYRELL from the bands good friends INTERLOCK.

* Aeturnum, Aeturna, Aeturnus, and Aeturn have similar meanings in their translation from Latin.  Nox Aeturnum is proud of their M and think its rather an English thing to do, so please dont complain the translation is wrong.  We don't really care if it is, the name of the band is NOX AETURNUM and as far as we are concerned, it means Eternal Night, or "The Night Eternal" if you prefer, either of which works for us and seems to sum up the whole idea of the bands outlook musically.  Indeed, "The Eternal Night" is a strong metaphor for death.  So now you know!
